New longer Sunday trading
In the excitement of the Olympics, you may not have noticed that some of your favourite stores are open longer on a Sunday.
This is due to the fact that larger stores can remain open for longer on the eight Sundays that fall during the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympic Games.
Under the current Sunday trading laws, large shops are only permitted to open for six hours between 10am and 6pm on Sundays. If this relaxation had not been put in place, then the official merchandise stores on the Olympic sites could not open for more than six hours on Sundays.
The change is not limited geographically and applies equally to all shops across the country and is designed to shown that Britain is open for business. Retail workers’ rights are not affected and they are still able to opt out of Sunday working.
If judged a success, this temporary change could be the first step towards a permanent change in the law.
If you are a business owner considering opening for longer on Sunday you will need to consider:
- Lease restrictions – are there any restrictions in your lease limited the hours which you are able to open on a Sunday?
- Employment Contracts – do your employees’ contracts provide that your employees work set hours and/or have they contracted out of working on Sundays.
