Number of employees on zero hours contracts continues to rise

Thu 23rd Apr 2015

According to a Labour Force survey conducted by the Office for National Statistics the number of employees on zero hours contracts continues to rise. Zero hours contracts remain a sensitive area and are not well understood. There can be advantages to both employers and employees of these arrangements. There is an incorrect assumption that anyone working on these sort of arrangements have few, if any, employment rights. Issues to be aware of are paid holiday entitlement, pension rights and differential treatment of staff between permanent, temporary, full time and part time staff. There is always a risk that zero hours arrangements that are regularly used turn into permanent contracts. That is fine as long as everybody understands that this is what is intended. These arrangements need to be looked at carefully to ensure that they are what everyone thinks they are.
