Coodes’ Business Services team supports businesses across the South West and beyond with a whole host of legal issues. The team includes lawyers with a wide range of legal expertise and experience. Here, Partner and Head of Corporate and Commercial Kirsty Davey, reflects on her career to date and shares some of her personal passions.
I am a corporate and commercial solicitor and deal with a variety of business transactions, ranging from buying and selling businesses to preparing and negotiating contracts, terms of business, partnership agreements to company restructurings. I support businesses at all stages, from start up through to succession or sale.
All of my family are musical and music was very much a part of my life growing up, so there was an expectation that I may follow my siblings into a career in music. I stepped away from this as I also enjoyed language when studying and a career in law followed quite naturally from that.
As corny as it may sound I just like helping people and the joy of working in the South West is that you can so clearly see your clients grow and prosper in the community. It is also lovely to help clients over a period of time so you build a good rapport with them and really get to know what they are about.
I have been working entirely from home since the start of the first lockdown back in March 2020. At first, like so many others, I was expecting this to only be on a temporary basis. As this became more permanent I have adjusted various processes, alongside Coodes investing in new systems and software. Our priority throughout has been to ensure that we can still offer the same level of service to our clients. I was always working paper light but am now paper free.
We have so many brilliant businesses in Cornwall that are resilient and at the forefront of what they do. Being based in the South West can have its own logistical challenges and I think one of the strengths of the community is its adaptability but also the desire to help one another out. We also have a lot of family owned businesses that have shown brilliant diversification over the years from generation to generation.
Being able to enjoy all that Cornwall has to offer. During the pandemic being lucky enough to have local walks and opportunities to enjoy the outdoors has been so welcome. Moving back to Cornwall all those years ago was the best decision that I made!
I have a musical background and have been lucky enough to have played in some pretty brilliant places including the Albert Hall and Birmingham Symphony Hall. I started playing the violin when I was three but moved on to brass instruments after that. I have had some brilliant times travelling around with my fellow bandies!
I think they would say that I am outgoing but serious about my work. I do try to make people smile where I can and so I think that they would also say that I am fun.
Putting the obvious essentials aside (laptop and phone), I don’t think that I could work without tea. I don’t think that needs further explanation!
