Mike Gregson

Thu 24th Feb 2022

It is with great sadness that I share with you that our Partner, Mike Gregson, passed away peacefully on Monday 21 February after a short illness.

Our heartfelt condolences go to all of Mike’s family, friends and colleagues, and we will continue to support them in any way we can.

Mike was a brilliant, highly respected lawyer who represented and helped many thousands of people during difficult periods of their lives.

He qualified as a Solicitor in 1980 and his career with Coodes started in 1986, so has been a very long one. We will miss him greatly.

I was privileged to accompany Mike’s family to a special remembrance hearing held for him at Truro Crown Court on Friday 25 February when some of the leading figures in Cornwall’s legal sector paid tribute to Mike.

At the hearing, Barrister Jason Beal described Mike as “a colossus of the legal scene,” and “the go-to solicitor in Cornwall,” adding that “He always had time for you and would give help and advice to those starting out as a barrister or solicitor.”

In his speech, Judge Robert Linford, who chaired the hearing, said: “Mike was a good person, a good solicitor and fine advocate. He knew cases inside out and upside down. He had a remarkable grasp of the law.

“He had a reputation for being clever, articulate and determined. He’d give clients 100 percent.”

We have also been flooded with tributes from colleagues. I’d like to share a couple of these with you.

“Mike’s passing is a huge loss to all that had the pleasure of knowing and working with him. He was simply the finest Criminal lawyer any of us had ever come across. Mike took me on, trained me, looked out for me and dug me out of a few scrapes. When you needed the best, you turned to Mike. The Cornish legal scene will never quite be the same.” Chris Andrews, Partner, Crime team, Coodes Solicitors.

“You know how much I enjoyed my annual visits to Cornwall and that was not least because I knew I would have to be ready to deal with any issue that Mike might raise. He always challenged my views with great good humour. He was a far better and more knowledgeable lawyer than I ever was and this is a loss to the whole profession and not only to the criminal justice system in Cornwall. It was no surprise that he was my “go to” solicitor in Cornwall.” London solicitor.

Mike’s funeral was held privately on 7 March 2022 and was followed by a celebration of his life for family, friends and close colleagues.

Mike’s family is fundraising for Cornwall Hospice Care in Mike’s memory. To donate, please visit their Just Giving page.

If you wish to send any messages to the family, please do so via Coodes by emailing peter.Lamble@coodes.co.uk.
