Coodes Solicitors is reporting a growing number of enquiries from patients of a doctor who was struck off earlier this year after the Royal Cornwall Hospital Trust wrote to former patients of his who were not part of the original GMC investigation.
Dr Iuliu Stan worked in Trauma and Orthopaedics as a locum senior house officer for five years at the Royal Cornwall Hospital at Treliske in Truro from 2015 to 2020.
He was struck off after being found guilty of misconduct by the Medical Practitioners Tribunal, which concluded that he had ‘preyed’ on male patients for his own ‘sexual gratification’. A number of the victims were minors.
Rachel Pearce, Head of Personal Injury and Clinical Negligence at Coodes, said her department had been contacted by a growing number of patients who had received a letter from the Trust and were concerned about the treatment they had received.
She said: “We know that Dr Stan personally performed hundreds of intimate procedures and that a misconduct hearing heard that some of his patients, including children, were subjected to unnecessary and invasive procedures for his own sexual gratification.
“This occurred over a number of years and questions have rightly been asked about how it was allowed to go on for so long and why it took years for patients to be notified after he had left the Trust’s employment.
“We are receiving new enquiries from patients concerned that they have been affected, which suggests there are more yet to come to light. If you have received a letter from the Trust about this matter or believe that you have been treated inappropriately by Dr Stan, we urge you to get in touch so that you can have specialist representation and get to the truth about what may have happened to you or a loved one. We fully appreciate how upsetting and difficult these matters are for patients and their families – especially when you receive a letter out of the blue – and want to reassure anyone affected that our team is experienced in handling these distressing cases with sensitivity and understanding, as well as technical expertise in the relevant legal issues.”
