Coodes are proud to have been the main sponsor for Steven Webb’s 500-mile journey across Cornwall in his electric wheelchair, raising money in support of Cornwall Air Ambulance. The former Truro Mayor completed the gruelling adventure this week, raising over £7,000 in the process.

Over three decades ago Steven Webb found himself fighting for his life in the back of an air ambulance after breaking his neck and becoming paralysed. Now 33 years later, Steven has completed an incredible 500-mile journey to raise money for the Cornwall Air Ambulance Trust – the very organization that saved his life all those years ago.

Completing the Cornwall 500 Challenge took 29 days, covering up to 30 miles a day and battling the elements in the process. Along the way, he lay 50 plaques that tell key stories about Cornwall and the locations he visited – from its rich history and culture to personal experiences and storytelling.

It was rewarding for us to meet with him on his journey from our many offices in the county, giving him support and encouragement along the way, particularly when he was battling the elements and geography of the county in his wheelchair.

Rachel Pearce, Head of Clinical Negligence and Personal Injury at Coodes said: “A huge congratulations to Steven for completing this ambitious task. It was an honour and privilege to support Steven’s incredible challenge in aid of Cornwall Air Ambulance. Despite the challenging weather, it was incredible how many people turned out to welcome him over the finish line.

“I was lucky enough to meet him in Falmouth during his journey. Whilst sitting with him a group of freshers students were sitting on the next table, with one of the students bravely sharing his own disability, clearly moved by Steven and what he had set out to achieve! Steven has touched the lives of so many on his 500-mile journey around Cornwall and I’m looking forward to hearing what he plans next.”

Coodes have provided sponsorship to Steven which enabled him to buy the kit required for his wheelchair to attempt the challenge and have been wishing him well at different points along the route. He has raised over £7,000 to date but there is still time to donate via Just Giving or read about his journey on Facebook.

This journey will create a lasting impact and the Cornwall 500 is now a Community Interest Company (CIC).

We are sure the creation of this route and the plaques along the way will create a lasting legacy for Cornwall. If this inspires others, no matter what their abilities, to get out and enjoy all of our County, then the Cornwall 500 will have been a great success.
