Companies House have confirmed mandatory ID verification for businesses under the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023 (EECTA).
Jess Field, Paralegal in Coodes’ Corporate and Commercial team, wrote about the introduction of the Act in 2023. Subsequently, she looked at changes introduced in March 2024 and the Companies House fee increases that begun in May 2024.
As of 18 November 2025, Companies House will make ID verification for Directors and Persons with Significant Control (PSCs) mandatory. This will trigger a 12 month transition period by which businesses will need to comply by the end of 2026.
The introduction of the latest EECTA changes will see ID verification become a compulsory part of incorporation and new appointments for new Directors and PSCs. Additionally, existing Directors and PSCs will need to provide their personal code when submitting their first confirmation statement within the 12 month transition period. Personal codes are issued by Companies House once the ID verification is complete.
You can voluntarily complete the ID verification now, and we strongly recommend that if this applies to you, this is completed soon rather than later.
There are over seven million individuals listed as Directors and PSCs in the UK that will need to complete this process over the next 12 months. Therefore, the closer it gets to the mandatory completion date, the busier the system is likely to be.
Registering as soon as possible will avoid any delays in completing filings for your company as you will not be able to submit without first completing the Companies House ID verification.
For further information on completing your ID verification, please see the guidance provided by Companies House.
