Coodes staff choose Sowenna Appeal as charity of the year

Staff across Coodes Solicitors have named The Sowenna Appeal as the firm’s chosen charity of the year.

Coodes will support the charity with fundraising as well as raising awareness of the appeal, which is raising money to create the first ever mental health hospital for young people in Cornwall. The charity was selected via a staff vote.

Currently, many ill and vulnerable young people living in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly are having to travel hundreds of miles to receive treatment, often without the support of their friends and family. The Sowenna Appeal is aiming to raise £1.2 million to transform Sowenna into the UK’s first adolescent mental health unit for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly and is currently being built at the Bodmin Hospital site.

The appeal is looking to fund a number of additional items to aid young peoples’ recovery including parental accommodation, a sports barn and gym, a café area and therapeutic gardens.

Phillippa Patterson, Fundraising Appeal Manager at The Sowenna Appeal, said: “We are absolutely delighted to have been chosen as Coodes Solicitors’ charity of the year and are looking forward to working together. The Sowenna Appeal is raising money for the first ever mental health hospital for young people in Cornwall and for the icing on the cake, items that will make it the best it can be, such as a gym, activity barn, music and art therapy and sensory garden. The support from Coodes will enable us to equip more of these areas and provide the support to young people that we believe will be transformational in their care.”

Coodes has a strong track record of supporting charities, having previously raised money for a variety of causes including Cornwall Air Ambulance, The Invictus Trust and Macmillan Cancer Support.

The team has already started on their fundraising endeavours for The Sowenna Appeal, with a pet paw-trait competition at the Stithians Show and a guess the number of sweets in a jar competition at the Liskeard Show.

Lucy Theobald, Partner at Coodes Solicitors and Head of Charity Fundraising, said: “We are thrilled to be supporting The Sowenna Appeal as our named charity of the year. By working with The Sowenna Appeal, our staff will have the opportunity to support a great local cause that is making a difference to the lives of young people living in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

“We are looking forward to being able to donate a sizeable amount of money through many different fundraising activities that will support and benefit the first mental health unit for Cornwall and the young people who will use it.”
