Holsworthy takes the lead in helping make housing affordable for local people!

Tue 6th Jul 2010

Pam Johns who manages our Holsworthy Office comments on the Localism Bill and Holsworthy leading by example! She says…….. “there’s exciting times ahead locally with this Government committed to a “Localism Bill” meaning if there’s over 70% support for a scheme to build some houses for local people in a village/hamlet etc, the Local Housing Trust will NOT need to obtain planning permission from the Local Authority!……Already having a strong Community Property Trust in place, Holsworthy is “ahead of the game”, so to speak!”

The Holsworthy Community Property Trust (HCPT) was formed in 2005, first as a company limited by guarantee and then as a charitable company. Five flats had to be provided by a developer where an old supermarket stood, a “deal” was done with the developer having borrowed the monies from “equitable lenders” – Charity Bank and Venturesome – and then those five flats sold to local people on a shared equity basis, approximately 70% buyer and 3-% HCT. No rent or interest on the 30% just on an equitable mortgage to buy a house of their choice in Holsworthy – A Do It Yourself Shared Ownership scheme. It’s not just the Prince’s Trust doing this work!
