Meet the Team: Kayleigh Whitman

Fri 13th Oct 2023

Can you briefly describe what your role involves?

As an Associate at Coodes I act for businesses in a wide range of commercial disputes, but I particularly enjoy acting for my clients in construction and property disputes. This involves working with my clients to resolve disputes, and where necessary, help them with the litigation process.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I love the variety of work, which keeps me on my toes! I enjoy achieving positive outcomes for my clients and resolving what can be a very stressful and challenging situation for them.

Many of the working practices established during the pandemic have been retained. What do you now do differently compared to before Covid-19?

The changes made in the way we work following the pandemic is part of the reason I’m now at Coodes. I live in Devon (I’m a Cornish girl though and so I know the right way around for the jam and cream on a scone!) and being able to work from home as well as at our offices in Truro has really helped with having a good work/life balance.

What is the main challenge you see for your clients in the next few months?

Most of my clients have fared reasonably well, despite the economic uncertainty, and for some we’re seeing exciting growth, a testament to the resilience of the vibrant Cornish business community. But a further spike in interest rates could adversely affect some of my clients plans, particularly those in the construction sector where financial viability of projects will be examined closely.

What skills and character traits do you think are most important for someone doing your job?

I work with businesses that are dealing with stressful situations. My role is to step in and take away as much of that stress as possible by finding an effective resolution.

I’m really good at quickly analysing the root of an issue and whilst sometimes the law can be complicated and technical, I’ve become quite skilled at providing clear and concise advice for clients. I’m also super organised and have a high attention to detail which is important when even the smallest detail can have a huge impact on a litigation matter.

What have you been most proud of in your career to date?

Since I joined Coodes, there are two moments I’m most proud of. Firstly, being promoted to an Associate, and secondly, achieving highly commended for the Cornwall Law Society Commercial Lawyer of the Year award 2023.

Who or what inspires you in your life and work?

My dad is my biggest inspiration in life. He taught me to work hard, be kind, and keep a good sense of humour when times are tough.

What do you enjoy most about living and working in Cornwall [or Devon]?

Cornwall and Devon are among the most beautiful places in the world, and I feel extremely lucky to work in Cornwall and live in Devon, enjoying the best of what they both have to offer. I like finishing work for the day/week and heading to the beach or moors for some well needed downtime.

What’s your superpower?

Being organised or, my powers of persuasion!

What object would you not want to be without as you go about your daily work and why?

A notepad and pen for writing down important information.
