First Hundred Years: Kathryn Shaw

Coodes is celebrating the First Hundred Years project, marking the centenary of the Sex Disqualification (Removal) Act 1919, which paved the way for women to become lawyers.

To commemorate the first 100 years of female lawyers, Coodes is putting the spotlight on some of its own team members. Here, Chartered Legal Executive Kathryn Shaw reflects on her experiences as a conveyancer.

1. When and why did you decide to become a lawyer?

Thirteen years ago I attended a solicitor’s appointment with my friend. I was working in retail management at the time but found the appointment really interesting and, as I helped my friend throughout the process, completing paperwork etc, decided that this might be the new career for me! Shortly after that, I began studying CILEx at the local college at evening classes and the rest is history.

2. What drives you in your role?

I act in all manner of property transactions but particularly enjoy guiding first time buyers through the process of making the biggest purchase they have ever made to date. Their excitement on completion is infectious!

3. What do you like about working for Coodes?

I really appreciate the open and supportive culture where you are encouraged to progress. I work with a great group of people.

4. What is your proudest moment?

It was to be qualifying as a Fellow of CILEx following many years studying. It involved 14 written exams and completing a hefty portfolio of evidence.

5. What changes have you seen during your career that have affected female lawyers?

The main change I have seen is the increase in promotion of female lawyers to senior positions in the legal sector.

6. What advice would you give to a young woman considering a legal career?

Consider and research different routes of qualification – there are lots of options!
